Over thousand lessons and more than 10 years learning experience. I found these mistakes really kill a lot of guitar player dream. Some of my friends quit guitar playing because of these mistakes they have made.
1.Simply Seeking New Guitar Information Without A Proven Strategy To Reach Your Specific Musical Goals. Knowing new information is great but if you learn it in a wrong order then your progress will be very slow and sometime you can't improve at all because that "new" information is not for you. So, ask your guitar teacher to create a proven strategy for you based on your musical goal. Only when you have the strategy in place, then the information comes.
2.Teaching yourselves to play guitar. I believe there are a lot of guitar players around you did tell you they are self-taught guitar player. I was a self taught guitar player before. I found self-taught guitar players have at least 10 times slower progress compare to a guitar player that taking effective guitar lessons from a great guitar teacher. Why ?When I was a Self-taught guitar player, I spend a lot of time to search the right information, I don't have a proven learning strategy, I'm not guaranteed to become the guitar player I want to be, I'm not sure the item I practice was correct and what mistakes hold me back from being great and there are many other disadvantages . I'm not saying self-taught player can't be good but the point is if you think your future is not guarantee because you are frustrating of your own playing and dealing with a lot of unknown problem that hold you back. Why spend most of your life time on test yourselves. Unless you have already taught a lot of great guitar students yourselves, then I say you can teach yourselves guitar. Try to avoid this mistakes now if you are making this mistakes.

It's less effective and it's boring.

Once you have an effective strategy to become the guitar player you want to be, ALWAYS stay focused on it (unless your goals radically change)!! The very best way to do this is to have ONE primary guitar teacher who helps you to become the musician you really want to be.
